L'expérience des élèves
Mis à part ceux qui ont payé le prix le plus élevé, leur vie, de nombreux élèves ont subi des traumatismes qui allaient les suivre toute leur vie, et qui ont également été transmis à leurs enfants et petits-enfants.
L'époque des droits?
Le mouvement anticolonial prenait de l'ampleur dans le monde, et avec la Déclaration universelle des droits de l'homme en 1948 par les Nations unies nouvellement constituées, plusieurs personnes ont tourné leur attention sur les droits des peuples colonisés à l'échelle mondiale.
Le rassemblement de la colère
Répondant avec une colère et une assurance croissantes, les activistes autochtones ont rejeté l'idée d'un traitement égal devant la loi, la considérant au mieux comme simpliste. Ils ont affirmé qu'elle était utilisée pour cacher des décennies de privilèges matériels et politiques pour les Canadiens européens aux dépens des Peuples Autochtones.
Vérité et réconciliation
En 2010, la Commission pour la vérité et la réconciliation a commencé à recueillir des renseignements concernant l'expérience des Survivants et des Survivantes dans les écoles résidentielles et a déployé des efforts pour rendre ces renseignements publics. Ce processus a fourni aux Survivants et aux Survivantes une reconnaissance publique et commune de leurs nombreuses années d'injustice et de souffrance.
L'accusation de génocide
Dans les années 1990, des chercheurs sur les pensionnats et de nombreux leaders autochtones ont commencé à affirmer que les efforts du gouvernement canadien pour assimiler les Peuples Autochtones dans les pensionnats incarnaient le principe du génocide culturel : l'intention de détruire les Peuples Autochtones en tant que groupe culturel distinct.
Pensionnat autochtone de Cross Lake
Même si le gouvernement les finançait, les pensionnats autochtones étaient opérés par les églises et les membres du clergé remplissaient la plupart des fonctions pédagogiques et administratives. Cette photo fut prise au pensionnat autochtone de Cross Lake au Manitoba en 1940.
L’école industrielle indienne de Fort Qu’Appelle
Cette photographie de 1895 illustre des tipis situés en périphérie de la clôture de l’école industrielle indienne de Fort Qu’Appelle, située au village de Lebret dans la province de Saskatchewan. Les tipis appartiennent probablement aux familles des enfants qui fréquentent l’école.
Pensionnat autochtone de Fort Resolution
Dans les pensionnats autochtones bondés et en pénurie d’effectifs, les corvées physiques et domestiques effectuées par les étudiants étaient essentielles pour maintenir les écoles en vie. Sur cette photographie se trouvent des enfants qui coupent des billes de bois au pensionnat autochtone de Fort Resolution dans les Territoires du Nord-Ouest.
La traite des fourrures
Le commerce des fourrures a permis aux Européens et aux Peuples Autochtones du Canada d’interagir pendant près de 300 ans. Cette photographie date des années 1950, moment où l’étendue du réseau commercial avait beaucoup diminué par rapport à son apogée aux XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles.
Les excuses du premier ministre Harper
Les excuses faisaient partie du processus organisé par le gouvernement et les Premières Nations en tant que signataires de l'entente; il s'agissait d'une tentative d'aborder le rôle du gouvernement dans l'histoire des pensionnats autochtones.
