Who is an American? We will explore the many ways the United States has determined who may enter and who may be considered American, and how those decisions and definitions impacted American democracy.
Engaging students with current events is a crucial part of their development as informed and humane citizens in a democracy. Join us to discuss how to bring current events into the classroom, as well as to learn teaching strategies that foster constructive dialogue.
This workshop will draw on Facing History’s study guides for Night, Brown Girl Dreaming, Red Scarf Girl, and others to explore ways of engaging youth in thinking about identity, understanding the historical context of each text, and analyzing adolescent choices.
