The Honorable John R. Lewis, a key figure in the civil rights movement, leads congressional colleagues on an emotional pilgrimage to Alabama sites from that period of American history, including Montgomery and Selma, where young people played a pivotal role in the struggle for equality and voting rights. Lewis reflects on his experiences and provides a forum for others to help us understand what happened, and why it happened. The film, which Lewis narrates, includes archival film, historical photographs, and historical music recordings.
