This professional learning event will be led by Facing History staff. When you register, you will receive instructions for how to attend the event.

This event qualifies for ISBE (Illinois).

Up to 11 clock hours (CPDU's) for Illinois-certified educators will be offered for full participation.

Over the course of the two days, participants will:

  1. Receive access to a 12 lesson unit, The Red Summer in Chicago.

  2. Engage with the unit’s resources to prepare to support students in making connections between history and today.

Red Summer was part of a nationwide wave of racist violence against African Americans that occurred from April to November of 1919. This watershed event is part of our shared past and informs the city’s identity today.  Join Facing History for an interactive in-person workshop to engage in discussions about Red Summer in Chicago and how to bring the history to high school classrooms. Both this workshop and our related teaching unit highlight the agency and resistance of African Americans who confronted the racial violence and terror of the Red Summer in Chicago. The unit is designed to help students  examine and grapple with the weight of both individual and collective decisions in this history as they imagine the future of Chicago and consider the power of their own choices and actions today.

Who should take the course? This unit is intended for implementation in high school US History courses. Educators of Ethnic Studies, African American History, Chicago History, and Contemporary American History are invited to apply.

Schedule: 9:00am - 3:00pm on both days

Breakfast and lunch will be provided, vegetarian options will be included.
