Single Session

Our single professional learning sessions are designed to easily fit into your day. Typically one hour or less, these sessions explore timely and relevant topics including teaching strategies, current events, and more.

Instructor-Led

This professional learning event will be led by Facing History staff. When you register, you will receive instructions for how to attend the event.

CTLE hours are available for attendance at the workshop as well as the Community Event.

Have space for a conversation about contemporary antisemitism, racism, stereotypes and prejudices.
Gain strategies to lead classroom discussions on the importance of recognizing and addressing current forms of antisemitism and other forms of discrimination.
Engage with classroom resources to combat antisemitism, bigotry and hatred.

This workshop will be held in-person at Borough of Manhattan Community College, 199 Chambers St, New York, NY 10007 Richard Harris Terrace Room. Dinner will be provided after the workshop from 6:00 to 7:00 and all attendees are encouraged to stay for Confronting Antisemitism: Communities Standing Up, Together Community Event starting at 7:00.

In 2023, antisemitism and racist stereotypes continue to disrupt our communities and our efforts to live in a multicultural society. Jews and Jewish communities have been stereotyped, discriminated against, and violently attacked based on a wide range of false and dangerous accusations for millennia. This is, in part, why scholars have dubbed antisemitism an old and “convenient” hatred—and why questions remain about how it functions in society.

Join us for a 90 minute interactive workshop to explore ways to combat and resist contemporary manifestations of antisemitism. As educators we will discuss strategies to teach about common antisemitic stereotypes so that our students are better equipped to recognize and reject the antisemitism they may see online, in print, and in their communities. We will explore the questions: What is antisemitism, and how has it impacted Jews and non-Jews alike in the past and today? What are the consequences for a Democracy when a “single story” is used to exclude a group of people? This workshop will feature teaching lessons and resources that will help you make connections between traditional and contemporary antisemitism, and examine the shifting representations of this hateful ideology.

We will provide classroom ready resources, including:

A preview of the new lesson series, Preventing Hate Crimes created by Facing History in collaboration with the New York City Mayor’s Office for the Prevention of Hate Crimes
A preview of the new Facing History Study Guide to the film “Repairing the World,” a documentary on the response to the antisemitic shootings at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh

This workshop is intended for middle and high school educators.

Research released by the Claims Conference found that 49% of U.S. millennials and generation Z have seen Holocaust denial or distortion content online—and that one in five U.S. millennials and generation Z surveyed in New York believe that Jews caused the Holocaust. This toxic combination of ignorance allied with antisemitic hatred continue to permeate global consciousness, and teachers have an important part to play in turning the tide.

International Holocaust Remembrance Day is Thursday, January 27th. This is a day when we remember the 6 million Jews murdered in the Holocaust, their loved ones, and the ways in which this incalculable tragedy has transformed our world. It is also a time for educators to ensure their readiness to integrate instruction on the Holocaust into their annual teaching plans.

Explore Canada’s restrictive immigration policies that led to the refusal to accept Jewish refugees from Europe during the years 1933–1948. Joined by Dr. Harold Troper, Jewish Canadian historian and author of None is Too Many: Canada And The Jews Of Europe 1933-1948, we will study how antisemitism contributed to these policies and helped define Canada’s universe of obligation. We will specifically examine how Canada turned away the MS St Louis, a ship carrying 937 Jewish refugees attempting to escape Nazi Germany.

Learn about the increasing number of hate crimes fueled by antisemitism in recent years in Canada, as well as examples of individuals, groups, and civic leaders standing up and speaking out against hate. Jeff McGuire, Executive Director of the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police will speak about the rising rates of Antisemitic hate crimes in Ontario and the ways that police units across Ontario are responding. We will also explore the role of upstanders, and provide models for addressing hatred and intolerance for all of us to follow.
