Are you a seasoned Facing History teacher interested in digging deeper into Facing History case studies while also expanding your professional network? Join us for a three-part workshop series that is focused on doing just this.
You’ll attend three themed sessions that will challenge you to think critically about how we as educators can create school spaces that are safe, empathetic, and intellectually rigorous. At the same time we will work to build the foundation for a network of teachers and schools that can collaboratively work to promote a culture of educational excellence. During these workshops, you’ll play an active role in shaping this professional network and determining how it can be used to deepen your relationships with like-minded educators who are as passionate about the classroom as you are.
Schools are encouraged to sign up for this workshop series with a cohort that includes a senior Facing History teacher, a teacher new to Facing History and a building administrator*. The school-based cohort is strongly encouraged to attend all three sessions in order to strengthen the development of this cross-school network.

Workshop 1 -- The Complexities of Identity (October)

Workshop 1: The Complexities of Identity (October)/Full Day - 8:30 am- 2:30 pm
Learn how to develop school environments that explore and honor diverse student identities. We’ll use our resource, “My Part of the Story” and more deeply examine the tenets of culturally relevant teaching. We will also discuss activating the Facing History scope and sequence to help develop units of study where students have a voice in their educational journey and can feel both safe and intellectually stimulated.
Workshop 2: Choices in History (January)/Evening Session- 4:00 pm - 8:00 pm [Light Dinner will be Provided]
Using the case studies of Facing History and Ourselves, we will examine choices that individuals have made in history and explore the legacy of those choices. Then we will explore the core Facing History concepts of “we and they,” membership, and the Universe of Obligation both in history and today. We will look at historical and current school practices that have either impeded or enhanced the promotion of “school cultures of educational excellence.” We will then discuss those school practice “choices” and their impact on students.
Workshop 3: Promoting Empathy and Civic Participation (April)/ Full Day- 8:30 am - 4:00 pm
Refine your skills in creating reflective classrooms to create safe and brave spaces for students. You will deep dive into the Facing History Pedagogical Triangle and its use to foster civic participation in students. We will look at how school leaders choose to participate with students, community, and educational networks to build strong and sustainable schools of excellence. This session will serve to grow the partnership of schools who have attended this workshop series into a working group for future connection, innovation, and collaboration promoting school excellence.
