CHC2 Canadian History through a Facing History Lens (OTF)

Understanding Canada’s past helps young people understand what it means to be Canadian today, analyze the ethical questions that confront our nation, and consider the choices that individuals have to shape the country’s future. Using primary sources and student-centered historical thinking and learning strategies, this seminar will equip teachers with Facing History and Ourselves’ unique approach for engaging students. Through an examination of 3 case studies in Canada’s changing history of inclusion, we’ll explore Canada’s contemporary identity; continuity and change in our nation’s universe of obligation; Canada’s response to the Holocaust; and the history of Canada’s Indian Residential Schools and the call for reconciliation.

In this seminar you will:

  • Engage in active learning strategies that reinforce historical thinking skills, inquiry skills, and civil discourse for difficult conversations
  • Learn a new way of structuring curriculum to help students connect history to their own lives and the choices they make
  • Discover content that aligns with the updates made to CHC2 in response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action.
  • Receive a free copy of two Facing History and Ourselves’ resource books Stolen Lives: The Indigenous Peoples of Canada and the Indian Residential Schools and Holocaust and Human Behavior (4th ed.)

After this seminar you will:

  • Become part of the Facing History educator network, with access to a rich slate of educator resources, including downloadable unit and lesson plans, study guides, and multimedia
  • Be able to borrow books and DVDs through our online lending library
