2019 Student Upstander Celebration

Facing History students learn that everyday choices have power and that anyone can become a villain or a hero. As a result, young people across Los Angeles make a difference in our communities by speaking up on behalf of others and standing up to injustices of all sizes.

Join hundreds of students, teachers, administrators and parents from our Los Angeles Partnership Schools for great food and festivities at the 2019 Upstander Celebration as we amplify the voices and efforts of youth by sharing their stories and celebrating their impact.

Keynote speaker Jessica Smith-Peterson was presented with Facing History’s 2019 Los Angeles Upstander Award for her commitment to justice. Jessica is a Facing History alumna who now serves as Deputy Public Defender at the Clark County Public Defender's Office in Las Vegas, Nevada. In her work, Jessica zealously advocates on behalf of indigent defendants accused of misdemeanor and felony charges. Jessica will share stories and insights from her own journey as an Upstander.

We invite you to join the conversation about Upstanding on Learn+Teach+Share, the blog for Facing History in Southern California.
