2017 Summit on School Culture: I Learn America

Telling Our Stories:

How do you build a more compassionate school culture?

This year’s Summit on School Culture, presented by Facing History and The Allstate Foundation, will feature the film I Learn America, and 6 Words Fresh Off the Boat, a book of immigration stories told in six words. I Learn America follows five students at Newcomers High School, all new immigrants from around the world, as they navigate a new school, a new country, and the desire to find a sense of belonging. It has much to teach us about building a school community characterized by empathy, curiosity, and student empowerment.

After the film screening, conversations will be held in smaller groups designed to facilitate cross-school engagement. Student and adult leaders from 17 middle and high schools in partnership with Facing History will continue to meet in the afternoon to develop action plans for creating an inclusive culture at their own school.
