Teaching Civics through History: A Partnership Opportunity for New York Schools

This partnership opportunity is for New York secondary school History or Civics Teachers or Department Chairs who are:

• Looking to promote students’ civic agency and participation by deepening historical understanding, critical thinking, ongoing self-reflection, civil discourse, and navigating current events.
• Offering—or hoping to offer— New York’s Seal of Civic Readiness to your students.
• Developing or refining a civics elective or a unit that integrates Facing History’s standards-aligned resources and teaching strategies, and Facing History’s approach to Civic Education

Successful applicants will:

1. Be public middle and high school teams from New York (City and State) with 1 to 4 interested History or Civics educators
2. Attend Facing History’s in-person summer seminar, Civic Agency and The Pursuit of Democracy: Teaching Civics Through History August 13-15, 2024 in Manhattan. 
3. Use the materials found in Civic Agency and the Pursuit of Democracy to teach a new Civics-based semester long course or to integrate the materials into a pre-existing History or Civics course with the guidance and coaching from Facing History program staff

Awarded Schools Will Receive the Following

1. Fee waivers for each team member to attend Facing History & Ourselves’ in-person seminar, Civic Agency and The Pursuit of Democracy: Teaching Civics Through History, August 13 - 15, 2024 in Manhattan. (Travel and lodging costs to the seminar, if needed are not covered by this opportunity.)
2. Year-long consultation and support from Facing History, including up to three planning sessions for eligible staff. 
3. Complete access to Facing History’s online resources, including full publications, teaching ideas, classroom materials, webinars, and streaming videos.
4. Share feedback on our Civics and History resources and best practices you have learned from using the materials with Facing History Staff. 
5. Participate in three implementation consultations throughout the school year (beginning, mid-year, end of year) to support usage of Facing History resources. These can be held remotely. 
6. Awardees who fulfill the above obligations will each receive a $250 digital debit card

Note: Space is limited. Priority will go to schools implementing or applying to implement the Seal of Civic Readiness, but other New York schools are encouraged to apply.

Awarded Schools Commit to the Following

Each school commits a team of one to four educators to participate in this grant. Participating teachers are required to:

1. $25 registration fee waivers for each team member to attend Facing History & Ourselves’ in-person seminar, Civic Agency and The Pursuit of Democracy: Teaching Civics Through History, August 13 - 15, 2024 in Manhattan. (Travel and lodging costs to the seminar, if needed are not covered by this opportunity.)
2. Use the materials and pedagogy received at the summer seminar in your classroom during the school year.
3. Secure approval and support from school administration to teach Facing History resources as per #2. 
4. Share feedback on our Civics and History resources and best practices you have learned from using the materials with Facing History Staff.
5. Participate in three implementation consultations throughout the school year (beginning, mid-year, end of year) to support usage of Facing History resources. These can be held remotely.

Awardees who fulfill the above obligations will each receive a $250 digital debit card.

Eligibility

• Public middle and high schools in New York (including charters)
• Educators who teach Civics, History, or Social Studies
• Eligible schools are those able to produce teams of 1–4 educators, all of whom have agreed to participate in Facing History professional learning and use Facing History resources, pedagogy, and approaches in their courses throughout the school year.
• Schools offering New York’s Seal of Civic Readiness or in partnership with NYC Public Schools Civics for All Team are encourage to apply

Application Process & Timeline

1. Apply as a team of 1 to 4 teachers using our application form. The application period will close April 12th.
2. February- April: Facing History staff will review applications and reach out to schedule an interview with eligible applying teams.
   • Interviews will take about 30-45 minutes via video-conference.This is an opportunity for Facing History to learn more about your school/district, for teacher teams to discuss reasons for applying and to ask questions about using Facing History’s content and methods. 
3. Applicants will be notified of acceptance on a rolling basis, no later than May 3, 2024.
4. All Accepted educators must sign up for the August 13 - 15, 2024 seminar in Manhattan by June 14, 2024
