President and CEO
Roger Brooks serves as President and CEO of Facing History and Ourselves, an international nonprofit educational organization that seeks a world guided by knowledge and compassion, not bigotry or prejudice. Facing History trusts students to wrestle with complex moments in human history and their connections to current events, helping them become engaged, informed, and compassionate citizens. Worldwide, Facing History reaches more than 70,000 teachers and millions of students each year.
Roger joined Facing History in 2014. Under his leadership, the organization launched an ambitious strategic plan to dramatically increase its reach to new audiences and areas. He established a diversity and inclusion program, with emphasis on hiring of diverse candidates and building a world-class workplace culture. Facing History is strengthening its core work in schools and classrooms, scaling its impact with a broader network of educators and raising its voice as a thought leader in education.
Roger came to Facing History following a long and distinguished tenure at Connecticut College as the Elie Wiesel Professor in the department of Religious Studies (1991-2014). He also has a long standing partnership with the Holocaust Education Foundation at Northwestern University, which prepares collegiate faculty to teach courses and curriculum related to the Holocaust and genocide. He received their Distinguished Achievement Award in 2014. An expert in early rabbinic culture, Roger is the author or editor of six books and numerous articles.
Vice President and Chief Program Officer
Marc Skvirsky joined Facing History and Ourselves over 30 years ago. Marc directs all aspects of Facing History's program implementation in schools, districts, and educational networks and is responsible for the ongoing professional development of program staff in new scholarship, pedagogy, instructional technology, and educational trends.
He designs Facing History-themed international study trips for stakeholders, including to South Africa, Eastern Europe, Northern Ireland, and the American South, and speaks extensively on topics ranging from school reform and civic education, to Holocaust and genocide studies, and social-emotional learning. Before joining Facing History, Marc was a social studies and English teacher, and participated in the design team for an urban middle school magnet program. He received a B.A. in education and M.Ed. from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.
Chief Development Officer
Jeremy Cramer joined Facing History and Ourselves as Chief Development Officer in 2016 to lead Facing History’s multi-region development team. Previously, Jeremy served as Vice President, Major Gifts of City Year, Headquarters and Managing Director of City Year, Miami (2009-2016) where he established the Red Jacket Society, which doubled the number of $10,000+ donors across the country and raised an additional $10 million in multi-year gifts.
He has also served in leadership roles at United Way, The Fay School and the ALS Therapy Development Foundation. He received a B.A. from Tufts University.
Chief Operating Officer
Anne-Marie Fitzgerald joined Facing History and Ourselves as Chief Officer for Regional Operations in 2014. She took on the role of Chief Operating Officer in 2017. She oversees the organization’s nine satellite offices in the US, Canada and the UK. She supports their programmatic delivery, fundraising, communications and financial management.
Prior to that she was the National Executive Director for Reach Out and Read, a nonprofit organization which promotes early literacy and school readiness to young children and their families. Anne-Marie oversaw all activities of the organization ($30M annual budget) and staff of more than 100 in offices across 26 locations. In 13 years at Reach Out, Anne-Marie held several other positions, including Director of Development and Communications, Director of Institutional Advancement, Vice President of National Programs, and Chief Operating Officer. Anne-Marie serves on boards and committees of multiple organizations, including the Cambridge School of Weston, RESPOND Women's Shelter, Fayerweather Street School, and Bridgewater State College.
Chief Financial Officer
Mariel Gonzales joined Facing History and Ourselves as Chief Financial Officer in 2018. She has an accomplished career in youth development and education, holding leadership positions in development, operations, strategy and finance for organizations with missions to promote social justice and encourage young people to act with courage.
Mariel joins us from BPE (formerly Boston Plan for Excellence), an organization that trains teachers in urban Teaching Academies, where she served as the Chief Financial and Administrative Officer. Prior to BPE, she was the Chief Financial Officer for YouthBuild USA for nearly a decade where the budget grew from $17M to $36M over her first three years, requiring her to establish processes for managing growth, expanding impact, and increasing compliance and efficiency. She received a B.A in Asian Studies from Dartmouth College and an MBA from the Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley.
Chief Marketing Officer
Lara James joined Facing History and Ourselves as its first Chief Marketing Officer in November 2017. In this new role, Lara leads planning, development and execution of all go-to-market activites, working across the organization to build our reputation and scale our impact. Prior to joining us, Lara served as Vice President, Brand Marketing for MassMutual, most recently, leading MassMutual’s rebranding, including its current “Live Mutual” advertising campaign. Lara served for nearly a decade as Vice President, Brand Marketing at Capital One, where she led the successful extension of the Capital One brand beyond the credit card vertical, and into consumer lending and retail banking.
A seasoned marketing veteran, Lara’s marketing communications have been recognized nationally and globally by both financial services and communications industry associations. Lara herself has been recognized four times by Black Enterprise magazine, including in 2017 as a Top Woman in Advertising and Marketing. Lara has a Bachelor of Arts from Oberlin College in History.
Chief Technology Officer
Cameron Logan joined the Facing History team in 2017. Most recently, he served as Senior Vice President for Product & Technology at C Space, where he built a global team of engineers, product owners, and operations specialists with a passion for technology, agile approaches, and operational excellence. Prior to C Space, Cameron served as the Senior Vice President of Technology & Innovation at Isobar/Molecular, and he was a co-founder and Chief Technology Officer of Envisa.
He began his technology career in Accenture’s Internet Center of Excellence. Cameron earned his A.B. from Princeton University, his A.M. and Ph.D. from Harvard University, all in Chemistry, with a doctoral concentration in Computational Chemistry. Cameron volunteers his time to run a local soccer league and to train youth in cybersecurity.
Senior Director of Organizational Advancement
Chris Stokes joined Facing History in 1990 to establish the organization's institutional fundraising program. Chris works with Board and staff leadership on governance strategy and process, and in that role she serves as Clerk of the Board of Directors. In addition, she oversees major public events including benefit dinners and Community Conversations; the Leadership Retreat and other governance convenings; and teams with development and communications leadership on organizational advancement strategy.
Chris served as Interim Chief Development Officer in 2008 and 2015. She previously worked in public relations, admissions, financial aid, and student housing at Wheelock College and Boston University. Chris holds degrees from Syracuse University and the State University of New York at Stony Brook. She has served on the boards of Women in Development, Open Circle, The Boston Cultural Council, The Chestnut Hill School, and several neighborhood service groups.
Chief Strategy Officer
Terry Tollefson has worked with Facing History and Ourselves since 1990. During that time, he has served in multiple roles including Director of Finance and Administration, convener of the Management Team, evaluator, grantwriter for corporations and foundations, and head of Human Resources. He has overseen federal funding efforts with the NEH, NDN, and Justice Department. He served as administrative officer for the Harvard/Facing History Project.
As Chief Strategy Officer, he works with the President and other senior staff on strategic planning, oversees evaluation, and leads the human resource function. Terry has been a teacher and administrator in public and private schools both in the United States and abroad, was Academic Dean at TASIS Cyprus, and a co-founding director of Intercollege (now the University of Nicosia) where he taught management in addition to being the Director of Administration. His doctoral dissertation at Harvard University focused on education and cultural differences. He also holds three Master's degrees in Teaching, Educational Administration, and Philosophical Theology.
