Anna Nolin discusses whether incidents of ostracism are inevitable.
Are cases like the Ostracism Case inevitable? I think the depth to which they're inevitable or the—how problematic they are is not inevitable. Students are going to have conflicts. Students are going to have friendship issues.
They don't have to be as painful if students are taught how to nurture friendships and how to have discussions of these types long before there's a big conflict situation. In large schools, that's hard to do, or if you're not able to put it into the curriculum. But it does have to be part of the way we teach students to interact with each other.
