Consider the different ways that the German Christian movement and the Confessing Church movement navigated their relationships with the Nazi government.
Letter from friend and parishioner Barbara Gregg to Waitstill Sharp, both in Wellesley, MA, October 5, 1940. View original letter below.
Dear Mr. Sharp,
Welcome home! I've thought of you both so much since we met and wished you godspeed in your undertakings of such greatness. I'm sure that you'll be disgusted by our seeming unstirredness, but to me we are just overwhelmed by the unbelievable horror and we all feel so unavailing.
We, your church need you, too, but not as the helpless people abroad. Bless you and Martha, though she is not here yet. Your congregation is certainly devoted to you both and are happy to have you here.
