Relationships & Naming

Maintaining consistency in our brand relationships and naming conventions is an important aspect of delivering a cohesive brand identity and experience for our audience.

"Facing History & Ourselves"

Use Facing History & Ourselves as main titles. Use the full brand name the first time it is being referred to in a document.

Use of “Facing History”

The shortened name “Facing History” may be used in body copy after the full brand name has already been introduced.

Use of “FHAO”

The acronym FHAO should not be used publicly in any case. It is recommended to also refrain from using this acronym for internal communications as well for best practice.

Facing History & Ourselves Audience Relationship

Our Brand is Consistent

Facing History primarily serves educators, students, engaged citizens, donors, partners, and funders but welcomes all audiences. We do not have different representations of our brand for different audiences. We are our authentic selves no matter who we are engaging with. We may have a change of tone depending on the subject matter that is being discussed or promoted, but our brand voice is constant.

Introducing Sub Brands

As a rule, Facing History & Ourselves does not introduce sub brands that are divorced from the parent brand name.

Facing History has named locations dictated by populations served by Facing History that are branded as a significant branch of our parent brand.

Facing History does not typically introduce sub brands of initiatives. We defer to using plain language to describe our programs, services, and products.

Naming Locations

Use the full Facing History & Ourselves brand name with the geographical area that represents the population served by Facing History. For example, if a core office is located in Boston, but serves all of New England, refer to New England as the area served, not Boston.

  • Facing History & Ourselves + [Area Served]
    • Example: Facing History & Ourselves New England

Naming Our Programs, Offerings & Initiatives

Our programs, offerings, and initiatives are non-branded. We have a unique program that contains four primary offerings:

  • Supportive professional learning and coaching for educators and schools
  • A challenging and effective pedagogy
  • Timely and relevant teaching resources
  • An inspiring community of learning and sharing among educators, students, donors, and engaged citizens.

We have many daily initiatives supporting these offerings. These initiatives are treated in name only, and are not treated as sub-brands.
