Key Points
-
Engage with new classroom resources that centre the voices and advocacy work of youth and communities
-
Learn about key moments in the fight for rights and inclusions in public schools in BC
-
Help young people to connect the realities of education to large societal ideas about inclusion, power and democracy
Every day, students and teachers spend hours immersed in the daily life of schools, but rarely do we think about how and why public education exists, or how contests of power and hopes for democratic access have influenced, and been influenced by the public education system. Grappling with these questions enables us to see why public education is so critical and how it connects to the core of a democracy.
In this workshop, you will engage with a selection of classroom resources that reveal how Indigenous and Chinese communities in BC and beyond fought for their rights and inclusions in public schools - contests that shaped and continue to shape the lives of Canadians today.
This workshop will run during the 10:30 AM - 12:00 PM (PT) session block of the BCSSTA conference.
Conference registration fees are on a sliding scale ($25-$235). Please see the conference page for more information.
