Participants will leave with:

  1. A deeper understanding of Facing History’s approach to teaching US History through hands-on activities and exploration of voices not often included in textbooks

  2. New strategies and pedagogy that promote democratic learning environments that allow students to grapple with complex histories and choices

  3. Recommendations for tools and  primary sources that could be used in US History courses

Facing History and Ourselves’ approach emphasizes students’ capacity for civic agency and develops the historical inquiry skills students need to generate more nuanced understandings of US History. During this interactive workshop, we will share C3-style inquiries and units from our US History Curriculum Collection and specifically explore the Japanese American Incarceration in WWII inquiry in depth.  Throughout, we will focus on the theme of  Democracy and Freedom and model teaching strategies that can be used in middle and high school classrooms.
