During the workshop, we will:

Explore a watershed moment of American Civil Rights history and the continued legacy of racial violence in the United States.

Examine ways that activists have used the media to push for racial justice.

Visit the Chicago History Museum’s exhibit and connect educators to this valuable local resource.

Reflect upon how this history connects with student and community identities and experiences today.

Consider how Emmett Till’s murder and the courageous choices of his mother, Mamie Till-Mobley, inspired a generation of activists to work towards racial justice. This professional learning workshop will explore a 6- lesson unit to support students' understanding about the history and legacy of the murder of Emmett Till. We will visit the Chicago History Museum’s new exhibit and reflect on the lessons this history holds, as we work to achieve racial justice and consider our own civic choices today.
Who should join the workshop? High school social studies and US history, Chicago history, educators and instructional coaches in Chicago and beyond
ISBE credits will be offered
Breakfast and lunch will be provided; vegetarian options will be included.
This workshop will be held 9:30 am—3:30 pm, in-person at the Chicago History Museum.
