Across the country, educators and administrators recognize the need to create learning environments where all students—regardless of background—feel seen, heard, and valued, and where they are supported in reaching their full potential. Facing History & Ourselves has designed a professional development model to help educators foster classrooms that affirm all students’ identities and equip them with the skills to think critically, express their voices, and actively engage in their learning.
Our vision is to support educators and school leaders in implementing equitable practices and curriculum policies that ensure every student thrives. During this two-day online experience, educators will explore key moments in the history of American education and their ongoing impact, while gaining strategies to build inclusive, student-centered classrooms that remove barriers to success and empower all learners.
In this online workshop, participants will:
- Explore the history of race, schooling, and academic identity to better understand the root causes of present-day educational inequities.
- Engage with contemporary scholarship and gain tools to address these historical legacies in your school context.
- Taking place over two days, this workshop offers a real-time, interactive online classroom where participants will connect in facilitated whole- and small-group sessions.
Workshop At-a-Glance Details
Who should take this workshop: Middle school and high school teachers, administrators, guidance counselors, social workers, school leaders, and school teams.
Cost: There is a non-refundable $25 registration fee due once your application has been accepted. The event fee for this institute has been waived thanks to generous funding from Facing History & Ourselves donors and partner organizations.
Duration: 2 days
Workshop Schedule:
- Wednesday, April 16, 2025: 11:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. ET (see in your time zone)
- Thursday, April 17, 2025: 11:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. ET (see in your time zone)
Time Commitment: Approximately 4.5 hours per day (plus some breaks)
Workshop Format: Facilitated Zoom meetings with workshop materials in Canvas.

Certificate of Completion
This event qualifies for a Certificate of Completion. At the conclusion of the event, participants will receive a Certificate of Completion for 9 hours of attendance. Certificates may be submitted for a school’s or district’s approval towards professional development credits. Requirements for professional development credits vary by state. It is the participant’s responsibility to ensure that they are meeting the requirements of their school, organization, and/or state.
