What makes democracy work? A strong democracy requires all of us to be engaged participants, but when teachers across the country are challenged on what and how they can teach, students miss out on vital lessons that can empower them to become informed civic actors.
On December 5, 2024, Facing History & Ourselves Northern California hosted a panel discussion featuring Katherine Campbell, Veronica Cañas, Gayle Dickson, and Ki Sung, moderated by Jared Kushida. This timely conversation explores how people have stood up for democracy at pivotal moments in history, what these upstanders can teach us about the present moment, and how we—as parents, caregivers, and community members—can help the next generation understand their role in a democratic society.
