See DetailsAfter World War I, Germany’s political leaders sought to transform Germany from a monarchy to a democracy, in a period called the Weimar Republic (1918–1933). It was a time of contrasts and conflicts, excitement and anxiety—and deep uncertainty. For 14 years the Weimar Republic attempted to build a democracy, which ultimately—but not inevitably—collapsed. What can we learn from this time period about the fragility of democracy, the role of civic participation, and the health of civil institutions? Join our conversation with historian Professor Benjamin Carter Hett to unpack these lessons from this history and grapple with the questions that it raises for us today.
