In this workshop participants will:

  1. Connect learning about race, equity and belonging to Facing History case studies and themes of identity, membership and choosing to participate

  2. Engage with current events and learn strategies to support students in making connections between history and today

  3. Receive lessons and teaching strategies to add to their curricular “toolkit”

Facing History and Ourselves Chicago invites educators to join us to discuss history and contemporary issues related to race, identity and belonging in schools. Educators will engage in discussions about the challenges of today and will receive tools to support your students' to build identity affirming and inclusive classrooms.

In community, we will explore how to integrate Facing History and Ourselves’ resources and pedagogy to support the teaching of history with a racial equity lens and to create classroom and school cultures of  belonging.  This interactive, in-person workshop will focus on the ways educators can be reflective in their support to students’ understanding and learning this content. In addition to, presenting ways educators can affirm students’ diverse identities, helping teachers and students face our collective histories and understand how they inform attitudes and behaviors in today's world. 

Who should take the course? This workshop is intended for middle-school through high school educators in Illinois

Cost: Free. The registration fee and event fee for this online course have been waived thanks to generous funding from Facing History and Ourselves donors and partner organizations.

Certificate of Completion

Up to 6 Illinois professional development hours will be given for participation.
