The first session of the Building Community Leadership workshop series focuses on reconnecting school leaders with their personal journeys as educators. Leaders will reflect on how their own stories influence their approach to shaping school culture and fostering belonging. The session explores how students, families, and staff collectively define a school’s identity, while also examining the impact of narratives and counter-narratives in creating inclusive environments. Emphasis is placed on belonging and engagement as foundational conditions for effective teaching and learning. To guide collaborative reflection, participants will use the CQS (Concerns, Questions, Suggestions) protocol, identifying barriers and opportunities for embedding Facing History’s principles into leadership practices.

The workshop is designed to be both reflective and practical: leaders will leave with concrete strategies, including a CQS Reflection Template, that can be used to promote ongoing dialogue and lead meaningful schoolwide conversations that advance equity, inclusion, and community engagement.
