Goals of this Convening
-
Engage with Meira Levinson, an expert scholar in educational ethics and civic education.
-
Connect with independent school leaders across the greater Boston area.
-
Learn about how Facing History & Ourselves can support independent schools in navigating crucial conversations related to political polarization.
Join special guest Meira Levinson, the Juliana W. and William Foss Thompson Professor of Education and Society at Harvard Graduate School of Education and a member of Facing History’s Board of Scholars, as she will engage participants in an interactive case discussion to help unpack how political polarization shows up in schools. She will also offer action steps for school leaders in navigating our polarized times. Participants will reflect on their own experiences and engage with resources that support navigating crucial conversations with staff, students, and families to cultivate healthy school cultures.
Facing History & Ourselves seeks to support school leaders as they navigate political polarization in their schools and communities, including addressing incidents of identity-based hate. This convening will incorporate scholarship and reflection to explore political polarization, which has had a growing impact on how schools teach and talk about civic and political issues. We will explore ways to reduce the negative effects of political polarization, as well as how to make informed and ethical choices in this current climate. We specifically invite Head/Assistant Heads of School, DEI Directors, Division Heads, and Directors of Departments to attend.
We will host an optional reception following the workshop session, 5:00-5:30 pm, to enjoy refreshments together and make connections.
This event will be hosted in-person at Beaver Country Day School.
