At the conclusion of viewing the webinar, participants can download a Certificate of Completion for one hour of attendance. Certificates may be submitted for a school’s or district’s approval towards professional development credits. Requirements for professional development credits vary by state. It is the participant’s responsibility to ensure that they are meeting the requirements of their school, organization, and/or state.

The Holocaust

In this webinar, Dr. Wolf Gruner highlighted forgotten acts of individual defiance during the Holocaust. He examined protests from German and Austrian Jews in Nazi Germany, challenging the traditional portrayal of Jewish passivity during the Holocaust. This event covered Jewish refusal to accept violence, and expanded the concept of resistance.

Dr. Wolf Gruner

Professor

Dr. Wolf Gruner is a professor of history at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles and is the Founding Director of the USC Dornsife Center for Advanced Genocide Research (previously USC Dornsife Shoah Foundation Center for Advanced Genocide Research) since 2014. He is a specialist in the history of the Holocaust and in comparative genocide studies. Dr. Gruner is the author of ten books on the Holocaust, among them Jewish Forced Labor under the Nazis. Economic Needs and Nazi Racial Aims with Cambridge University Press (pb 2008). His new book “Resisters. How Ordinary Jews fought Persecution in Hitler’s Germany” is forthcoming with Yale University Press in August 2023.

Research released by the Claims Conference found that 49% of U.S. millennials and generation Z have seen Holocaust denial or distortion content online—and that one in five U.S. millennials and generation Z surveyed in New York believe that Jews caused the Holocaust. This toxic combination of ignorance allied with antisemitic hatred continue to permeate global consciousness, and teachers have an important part to play in turning the tide.

This is a day when we remember the 6 million Jews murdered in the Holocaust, their loved ones, and the ways in which this incalculable tragedy has transformed our world.
