This in-person workshop introduces Facing History & Ourselves’ case study, “Holocaust and Human Behavior” through multimedia resources, readings, and teaching strategies that engage students in this powerful history and the themes of decision-making, ethics, and responsibility. With a particular focus on the Weimar Republic and pre-war Jewish life, this 3-day workshop walks participants through Facing History’s core pedagogy, emphasizing the factors that contribute to a strong democracy or serve to weaken it.

In today’s global climate, the urgency of sustaining democratic societies that are pluralistic, open, and resilient to violence is more pressing than ever. Studying the history of the Holocaust allows students to confront the profound moral questions and human consequences of extremism, dehumanization, and authoritarianism. Learn how to engage students in difficult histories while fostering their skills in ethical and moral reasoning, critical analysis, empathy, and civic engagement—all critical habits for sustaining democracy. This course is designed for educators in Jewish settings and will also examine how these themes connect to and expand upon lessons and resources pertaining to Jewish Identity; we will draw upon resources from our newest Jewish Identity collection and our Contemporary Antisemitism material.

This workshop is required for interdisciplinary educator teams at incoming Jewish Partner Schools but is open to interested applicants who teach middle and high school students in Jewish settings. Limited travel stipends available for qualifying educators.
