Expressing Diversity in Jewish Identity: Blending In and Standing Out
About this event:
Multi-Session
Our multi-session professional learning series are designed for in-depth exploration of themes and topics that help educators strengthen their skills and competencies. Session information is included in the event details.
Designed for educators in Jewish settings, this interactive workshop explores the Jewish holiday, Purim, with special guest, musical composer, Alicia Jo Rabins. Together, we ask how we can expand the Jewish narrative to include a diversity of Jewish identities through text and musical arts. Discover a new Facing History lesson that delves into the story of Purim as a framework to examine how Jews have preserved and protected their identities and culture in dominant societies by choosing when to blend in and when to stand out. Learn factors that affect identity, celebrate Jewish diversity with a focus on Mizrahi Jews. Enjoy samples from Alicia Jo Rabins’ musical curriculum, Girls in Trouble, and discover the complicated life of Queen Esther. Take away ideas for creating a welcoming community for different kinds of Jewish people through a study of text and a celebration of song.
In this workshop, facilitators will discuss how to :
- Reflect on our own multiple identities.
- Explore the complexity of identity and factors that lead to the choice to blend in or stand out through text and song.
- Celebrate and validate Jewish cultural traditions.
- Examine the effects of antisemitism on the expression of identity.
- Consider the impacts of upholding a single Jewish narrative.
- Draw connections between themes of Purim and contemporary Jewish identity.
