The struggle for and celebration of the passage of the three Reconstruction Era constitutional amendments shines a light on the hopes, challenges, and progress of American democracy. Join the Tenement Museum and Facing History & Ourselves for a workshop where we will learn about the choices and aspirations of freedpeople in both the South and locally in New York City during this time period.

During this workshop Facing History & Ourselves will introduce our case study, The Reconstruction Era: The Fragility of Democracy. Participants will be invited to consider the frequently used but rarely defined concept of freedom, and explore the many ways newly emancipated African Americans defined freedom in their own lives. Teaching this history is essential to helping students understand citizenship and democracy in the United States today.

Our professional learning experience will also include a tour of the Tenement Museum’s new permanent exhibit, A Union of Hope: 1869. From the vantage point of Rachel and Joseph Moore’s tenement apartment, participants will explore how working-class people organized to form societies, church groups, schools, and a Black press during the Civil War era in New York City.

This workshop is recommended for middle and high school social studies educators. Space is limited, so register now to reserve your spot!

Location: Tenement Museum
Address: 103 Orchard Street, New York, NY 10002
