“The descent into a final solution is not a jump. It’s one step. And then another. And then another.” - Toni Morrison

In today’s global climate, the urgency of sustaining democratic societies that are pluralistic, open, and resilient to violence is more pressing than ever. Studying histories of societal descent into extremism, violence and authoritarianism, and the human consequences of such systems, enables us to reinforce the value of strong democratic systems.

Join Facing History & Ourselves, in partnership with the Holodomor Research and Education Consortium, to deepen your understanding of the Holocaust and the Holodomor and the nature of state violence and genocide. Participants will gain tools to engage students in a meaningful study of the Holocaust and the Holodomor.

During this professional development day for educators, we will hear from Historians Dr. Olga Andriewsky and Dr. Anna Shternshis as they explore the histories of the Holodomor (Ukrainian genocide) and the Holocaust and the lessons these histories convey for us today.

The morning learning and Q&A will be followed by a catered lunch and hands-on learning workshops in the afternoon. Facilitation will be conducted by the Holodomor Research and Education Consortium and Facing History & Ourselves education staff.

Participants will experience engaging, collaborative, and interactive lessons that model classroom-ready strategies and primary resources. In addition, participants will receive The Historian’s Craft Lesson on Human Rights and the Holodomor and a downloadable PowerPoint classroom presentation from HREC.

This learning is intended for secondary school teachers of Canadian and World Studies, History, Humanities, and Genocide and Human Rights.

Lunch and refreshments will be provided.
