In this two-day seminar for middle and high school administrators and educators, participants will:

  1. Examine the role of bias in media

  2. Explore the impact of social media on young people

  3. Learn about how to identify the different types of false, misleading and manipulative content in circulation

  4. Engage with strategies designed to help students develop critical thinking skills to become reflective, conscientious consumers, and creators of media

This in-person workshop is intended for regional school teams (school leader, classroom teacher(s), and media specialist) able to attend together.

How can educators have conversations with students about media literacy in a reflective and constructive way to support them as both consumers and creators of digital information? These vital efforts help support students’ well-being, foster their ability to build healthy relationships, and give them skills needed to participate in our democracy. The development of media literacy skills can empower students to accurately assess information and to trust in their own capacity to discern what is true from what is not.

In this in-person, two-day professional learning, educators will explore resources that build media literacy in a critical, reflective, and constructive way. These resources will help you and your students better understand the changing media and information landscape and how this landscape impacts individuals, communities, and society.

We are excited to welcome Dr. Faith Rogow as a guest speaker at the workshop. Dr. Rogow is an independent scholar and internationally respected leader who has been an innovator of media literacy education practices for more than 30 years. She also served as the founding president of the National Association for Media Literacy Education, was a founding editorial board member of the Journal for Media Literacy Education, and was a founding advisor and project evaluator for Project Look Sharp (the nation’s first curriculum-driven media literacy education initiative).

This event will be hosted in-person at Kean University Human Rights Institute.
