In this in-person, one-day workshop for middle and high school educators, participants will:
-
Learn current scholarship on the history of the collapse of democracy in Germany, the rise of the Nazis, and the steps that led to world war and genocide; and examine new research focused on human behavior, group dynamics, and bias.
-
Discover new teaching strategies that help students interrogate text, think critically, and discuss controversial issues respectfully.
-
Explore new ways to structure curriculum to ensure that it’s relevant and that it helps young people connect history to the world today, their own lives, and the choices they make.
-
Engage with classroom-ready print and digital (including Google Classroom) resources.
This workshop introduces middle and high school teachers to the resources and teaching strategies in Facing History’s core resource Holocaust and Human Behavior, including how they align with the context of regional state mandates for teaching about the Holocaust.
Questions of how best to build and maintain democratic societies that are pluralistic, open, and resistant to violence are more relevant than ever. During the Weimar Republic and into the 1930s, German citizens turned away from democracy and embraced fascism and antisemitism. Studying how this happened invites students to wrestle with profound moral questions about human behavior and fosters skills that are critical for sustaining democracy, including ethical reasoning, critical thinking, empathy, and civic engagement.
This event will occur in-person at The Lyceum Conference & Event Center.
