As a participant in the pilot you will:

  1. This workshop is intended for educators who commit to piloting the unit and providing feedback to Facing History & Ourselves. 

  2. Learn about and engage with the unit at this workshop

  3. Teach the unit to a 7th grade Social Studies or Humanities class during the implementation window (September 2023 - November 2023) 

  4. Participate in an optional implementation meeting while teaching the unit

  5. Provide written feedback and participate in a feedback interview with Facing History staff 

This in-person workshop will offer educators the opportunity to help shape Facing History’s forthcoming unit created for 7th grade. The inquiry-based unit guides you and your students through a study of identity, community, and belonging throughout the past and present of Chicago’s neighborhoods, with a special focus on the Near West Side and Bronzeville communities.

We will explore the unit essential questions, How are neighborhoods shaped? How do our neighborhoods shape us?, and contextualize the development of Chicago’s neighborhoods through a wide variety of primary and secondary sources, classroom-ready lessons, and group discussions.   

About the Pilot

This workshop is intended for educators who have committed to piloting the Chicago Neighborhoods in History and Today: An Inquiry of Identity, Community, and Belonging unit and to provide feedback to Facing History and Ourselves.

Breakfast and lunch will be provided, vegetarian options will be included.
