This has been a challenging year for many of us, though as the end of the year approaches, we're feeling hopeful. What gives us hope today?
Young people. At Facing History we have the privilege of sitting in classrooms across the country, and we are always in awe of what we witness. We see students model what it means to have respectful and civil dialogue while valuing multiple perspectives. We see students listen with humility, ask questions, and have true empathy for others, even when their viewpoints differ. We see students stand up for what they know is right. And, we see students make connections between the history they learn about and their experiences in the world today.
So in this moment, we remain hopeful; hopeful in the power of young people for a promise of a better future. Here are just a few examples of some of the student upstanders that Facing History has the privilege of supporting through our work every day.
And this would not be possible if not for their teachers, who selflessly dedicate themselves to educating and empowering the next generation; who take the time to teach young people to discern facts from misinformation and to connect history with the world around them. They are teaching students the value of different perspectives, and the importance of holding multiple truths; they are helping them build strong critical thinking skills and a sense of civic responsibility and engagement. And as a member of our learning community, you are helping them do that.
Supporting Facing History ensures that teachers have the resources they need for their students; it’s an investment in the future of the next generation. In this moment, what could be more powerful than that?
