On February 28, 2023 Facing History was honored to bring the youngest Nobel peace-prize laureate and education activist Malala Yousafzai to meet with more than 100 high school students at Animo Jackie Robinson High School, a Facing History Partner School.
Students and teachers were excited to host Malala, an outspoken proponent for girls’s rights to education who, even after being shot by the Taliban, continued her activism. They had already read Malala’s book and several of the same students had created a mural at the school years ago, never expecting they would actually have the chance to meet Malala in person.
In addition to visiting students and viewing the mural in her honor, Malala joined students to discuss Stranger at the Gate, the Academy Award nominated film she helped produce. As the film’s education partner, Facing History is sharing Stranger at the Gate with high school educators and students across the globe along with a conversation guide to extend students’s reflection on the film's themes.
Standing up to Hate
The remarkable story told through Stranger at the Gate helps us examine the roles we can play to confront hate, reduce barriers, and increase understanding by seeing the humanity in others. You can view the film for free at Stranger at the Gate.
