Aimed at developing responsible, informed, and engaged student citizens, the NCSS College, Career, and Civic Life (C3) Framework for Social Studies State Standards was purposefully designed to provide guidance to states and local school districts as they work to:
- enhance the rigor of the social studies disciplines
- build critical thinking, problem solving, and participatory skills in the classroom
- align academic programs to the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts and Literacy in History/Social Studies.
To support adoption of the C3 framework, NCSS produced Teaching the College, Career, and Civic Life (C3) Framework: Exploring Inquiry-Based Instruction in Social Studies, a collection of 15 model lessons from leading social studies curricular organizations. Facing History provided Chapter 9: “Do Our Choices Matter? The Fragility of Democracy.”
This lesson encompasses the whole of the C3 Inquiry Arc, from questioning to action, and zooms in specifically on two distinct moments of instruction within the larger unit of study.
