Understanding the Armenian Genocide presents a critical opportunity for exploring diasporan identity, generational trauma, and the foundations of human rights and humanitarian endeavors today. Though it is now often referred to as a "hidden" or "forgotten" genocide, the Armenian Genocide was once widely covered in the news of the day. In fact, American humanitarian efforts were some of the largest in history. Using primary sources and critical literacy skills, explore the history of the Armenian Genocide and its enduring legacy on international justice.
This workshop is directed towards educators in Southern California. Educator applications within California, but outside Southern California, will be contacted for review.
In this seminar you will:
- Receive guidance for teaching about genocide with attention to the social-emotional needs of students, including potential use of the integrated unit: Teaching the Holocaust and Armenian Genocide
- Build greater understanding of this complex history in order to be more responsive to students in your classroom and to more effectively teach this history.
- Discover new interdisciplinary teaching strategies that reinforce historical and literacy skills aligned with Common Core and the state-adopted History Framework.
- Receive a free print book: Crimes Against Humanity and Civilization: The Genocide of the Armenians
