Join Facing History & Ourselves and Chicago Public Schools Department of Social Science and Civic Engagement virtually to learn about the new Facing History and Ourselves and CPS' unit The Red Summer in Chicago. The new CPS vision for Social Science emphasizes that students are engaging in culturally relevant and sustaining content through the practices of inquiry. This means that all of our students' identities, experiences and histories are fully reflected across the social sciences. This unit was constructed to align to this vision, which sheds light on a defining moment in Chicago’s history: a week-long episode of racial violence in 1919 that claimed the lives of thirty-eight people.
Though it was a watershed event in local history, the violence was part of a nationwide wave of racist violence against African Americans (and in smaller numbers, Mexican Americans) that occurred from April to November of 1919. Legacies of this “Red Summer” are essential to confront in developing an understanding of the systemic racial injustice, in general, and in the city of Chicago today.
In this interactive workshop, we will look at resources you can use to support students in an exploration of choices that Chicago’s politicians, community leaders, and individuals made during and in the aftermath of the violence. These choices presaged a century in the city’s history marked by racial inequality, discrimination, and protest and resistance—forces that persist in the fault lines of the city today.
- Receive access to The Red Summer in Chicago Unit, part of the Chicago Public Schools Curriculum Equity Initiative for 10th grade U.S. History
- Connect the lessons from Red Summer to other units in the 10th grade scope and sequence (including Teaching Reconstruction and Reparations Won) and the CPS Inquiry To Action Framework
- Engage with the unit’s resources to support students in making connections between history and today and consider how to engage in a remote setting
- Engage in culturally relevant and sustaining content that aligns with the new CPS vision for Social Science
Who should take the course? This unit is intended for 10th grade US History teachers. Educators of Ethnic Studies, African American History, Chicago History, and Contemporary American History are invited to apply.
Date: March 12 and March 19th
Time Commitment: This workshop takes place on Zoom from 10:00am - 3:00pm (CT) with breaks and a lunch hour from 12-1 on both Friday March 12 and Friday March 19th. Attendance on both dates is required. There will be reading in between sessions.
Cost: Free. The registration fee and event fee for this online course have been waived thanks to generous funding from Facing History and Ourselves donors and partner organizations.
Subs: Facing History is able to provide a sub bucket number for teachers who request coverage through their schools.
Format: Synchronous Online Zoom Workshop with additional reading to take place outside of the sessions. Details for joining the Zoom meeting will be shared by email prior to the event.
