News Literacy for a Healthy Democracy

How can we prepare our students to be active members of an informed citizenry, navigating through the waters of social media and digital content as effective consumers of news? Join us in partnership with the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute to explore these concepts as well as the role of the press in a healthy democracy. This workshop will explore ways to understand the relationships between readers and journalists and how to build literacy to research, evaluate, create, and communicate through various types of media.

In this workshop, participants will:

  • Engage with classroom-ready multimedia resources for teaching news literacy

  • Utilize lessons from Teaching Reporter and Facing Ferguson: News Literacy in a Digital Age.

  • Discover new teaching strategies that help students interrogate text, think critically, and discuss controversial issues respectfully.

  • Beta test the Reagan Foundation’s new (opening summer 2020) simulation plotline, based on the downing of Korean Airlines flight 007, which includes a module on the press.

  • Receive complimentary admission to the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and the Air Force One Pavilion.

After this workshop, participants will:

  • Become part of the Facing History educator network with access to a rich slate of educator resources, including downloadable unit and lesson plans, study guides, and multimedia

  • Receive priority registration for your students for the upcoming News Literacy Speaker Series hosted by the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute.
