Teaching Memoir: Identity, History, Choices

This workshop will draw on Facing History’s study guides for Night, Brown Girl Dreaming, Red Scarf Girl, and others to explore ways of engaging youth in thinking about identity, understanding the historical context of each text, and analyzing adolescent choices. The workshop will provide teachers with rich primary sources and historical background materials, along with approaches for teaching memoir as informational text, to equip teachers with practical literacy strategies. 

Workshop participants will:

  • Receive a hard copy of the Teaching Night study guide

  • Learn a range of teaching strategies for helping students process emotionally powerful materials

  • Understand Facing History’s unique approach to teaching through an interdisciplinary lens

  • Leave with classroom-ready multimedia tools and resources
