We will introduce tools and resources for teaching Enrique’s Journey, which analyzes a true story of a teenage boy’s odyssey to find his mother who left Honduras for the United States. Told from a journalistic perspective, this story provides insight into the challenges of immigration and the people who risk so much for a chance to have a better life. This workshop will be complemented later in the year with a presentation from the author Sonia Nazario, winner of the Pulitzer Prize.  Educators who attend this workshop will be expected to bring their students to the presentation in February, 2018.

In this workshop you will:

  • Discover new interdisciplinary teaching strategies that examine immigration through a critical lens

  • Receive a free copy of the book Enrique's Journey

  • Explore themes of immigration, identity, and membership to prepare students for a presentation with the author, Sonia Nazario

After this workshop you will:

  • Receive coaching and support as you implement this unit in your classroom

  • Become part of the Facing History Educator Network, with access to a rich slate of educator resources, including downloadable unit and lesson plans, study guides, and online tools

  • Be able to borrow books and DVDs through our online lending library at no cost

  • Receive a free class set of books and complimentary seats for your students to attend a presentation with Sonia Nazario on February 6, 2018 at the Orpheum. Workshop attendees will be expected to bring their students to this presentation. Schools are responsible for transportation of students to and from the presentation.
