Teaching Identity and Circumstance through Holocaust Literature

This seminar prepares teachers to interweave a literary analysis of Holocaust literature, including short stories, poetry, diaries, and memoir, with an exploration of the relevant historical context for these texts. The seminar explores questions such as: How is our identity shaped and reshaped by the circumstances we encounter? How do tragedy and trauma influence an individual’s identity and choices?

This approach to Holocaust literature will deepen literacy and historical analysis skills, historical understanding, and social-emotional competencies, particularly as they relate to perspective taking and social and cultural awareness.

Workshop participants will:

  • Learn a range of teaching strategies for helping students process emotionally powerful materials

  • Apply Facing History’s unique methodology to the study of Holocaust literature and history in order to explore themes of identity, we and they, choices, and civic participation

  • Receive a free copy of Facing History’s study guide for teaching Elie Wiesel’s Night and access to Facing History’s digital collection of Holocaust diaries with accompanying lesson ideas
