Literature that Engages Students in Identity, History and Choices

This seminar will equip you with interactive literacy strategies that you can use to engage your students in conversations around identity, history, and choices. We’ll use Facing History’s approach for teaching literary texts to middle and high school students, which weaves in rich primary sources and historical background for teaching fiction and memoir. We’ll explore Facing History's study guides for Night, To Kill a Mockingbird, and Farewell to Manzanar. Other works the seminar will address include Wonder and Warriors Don’t Cry. Themes and strategies will apply across many works of literature, beyond those we study together in the seminar.

Recommended for 6th-12th grade teachers.

In this seminar you will:

  • Discover new interdisciplinary teaching strategies that reinforce historical thinking and literacy skills
  • Explore topics such as identity and belonging, membership, stereotype, and upstander behavior

After this seminar you will:

  • Become part of the Facing History educator network, with access to a rich slate of educator resources, including units and lesson plans, study guides, and multimedia
  • Be able to borrow books and DVDs through our online lending library at no cost
