This three-part online workshop series will highlight Facing History’s Coming of Age in a Complex World Collection. The series will have a particular focus on exploring classroom tools and practices to help students cultivate the literacy skills to process text through a critical and ethical lens and develop a sense of civic agency. Teachers who attend these workshops will get a facilitated opportunity to explore this exciting new resource collection in conversation with other educators and to apply what they learn to their own classroom context. 

During the workshop series, we will:  

  • Explore the new Coming of Age Collection with a focus on learning  practical classroom strategies to help students process the texts you teach through a critical and ethical lens and to develop their sense of civic agency
  • Use the tools in the Facing History Unit Planning Toolkit to support lesson planning and classroom instruction
  • Work with other educators to consider classroom application of these resources

Registrants are encouraged to attend all three sessions to the best of their ability. Live sessions will not be recorded, but materials will be made available at the end of each session. 

Registrants are encouraged to choose a coming-of-age text (a novel, short story, memoir) to bring with them to the series. 

The series will take place over three 60-minute sessions.  

Session One
Exploring Text Through a Critical and Ethical Lens, Part One
March 3, 7–8 PM ET

In this session, we will explore pieces of Facing History’s new Coming of Age collection, particularly the resources in the Unit Planning Toolkit, that help students process text through a critical and ethical lens. We will look at lesson planning resources that can help students practice perspective-taking in literature and their own lives, in order to develop empathy and recognize the limits of any one person’s point of view.

Session Two
Exploring Text Through a Critical and Ethical Lens, Part Two
March 10, 7–8 PM ET

In this session, we will introduce the concept of “moral universe,” the written and unwritten rules of a place that help to determine characters’ interactions, choices, and courses of action. We will then look at ways for students to apply this concept to literature and their own lives. 

Session Three
Developing a Sense of Civic Agency in the ELA Classroom
March 15, 7–8 PM ET

In this final session, we will define civic agency, action, and power, and consider how to apply these concepts to literature. We will also look at ways  to 
help students analyze key moments of decision-making in a text in order to explore a character’s sense of agency.


About the Presenters/Panelists: 

Karen Scher
Karen Scher is a Senior Program Associate in the New York office of Facing History, and works with educators and schools to implement culturally responsive and sustaining curriculum and racial justice-centered approaches in ELA, social studies, and humanities classrooms. Prior to joining Facing History in 2014, she was a high school humanities teacher at a Facing History Partner Schools Network public school in the Bay Area. 

Arisela Hernandez
Arisela Hernandez is a Program Associate in Southern California. She was a high school ELA teacher for seven years and has facilitated workshops for educators on dominant vs. nondominant aspects of identity, dimensions of oppression, culturally sustaining teaching practices, and critical theory reading practices.

Who should take this workshop: 612th grade English and language arts teachers and curriculum specialists.

Cost: Free. The registration fee and event fee for this online workshop have been waived thanks to generous funding from Facing History and Ourselves donors and partner organizations.

Duration: 3 weeks. There is a 60-minute session in Zoom each week. There is no work between the sessions.

Time Commitment: Approximately 1 hour per week.
