In 1957, nine black teenagers faced angry mobs on their first day of school in Little Rock, Arkansas. Their attempt to desegregate Central High School ignited a crisis that historian Taylor Branch described as “the most severe test of the Constitution since the Civil War.” Using our resource, Choices in Little Rock, participants examine ways to engage students in the issues raised by the U.S. civil rights movement and their implications for today. This online course takes place over seven weeks. Each week, participants will engage in a variety of activities that will include reading materials, viewing video clips, creating journal entries, and participating in online facilitated discussion forums. Participants will be expected to participate for a minimum of four hours per week for the seven weeks of the course. The online course format is asynchronous so that participants may complete assignments for any given week according to their own schedule. There will be two live 1 hour webinars for the course. The first webinar is an Orientation to the course and will be held on June 19 at 8 PM EST. The second webinar will be a conversation with Dr. Sybil Hampton and will take place in week 5 of the course. We will confirm the date and time as soon as we schedule. This webinar has been a highlight for many!

Explore topics including federal and state rights, the American Constitution system, and the legacies of the Brown v. Board Supreme Court decision. Issues of human behavior, race, and the power of individual choice will also be covered

Fee: US$350 per person fee includes all materials. This fee does NOT cover the graduate credit option.
As an option for our course participants--and at an additional cost--we offer three graduate credits for successful completion of this course. If you are interested,email online learning. Please note that participants taking the course for graduate credits will have additional requirements, including a final project.
A limited number of scholarships are available. We reserve scholarships for those middle or high school teachers of history or English who can commit to implementing Facing History's pedagogy and content in at least a four-week unit in their classroom during the school year in which they take an online course with us. Please indicate on your application if you are applying for a scholarship and describe in as much detail as possible how you plan to implement the pedagogy and content from this online course in your classroom. Please note: we require that all scholarship applicants first apply to their school or district for professional development funding before we are able to consider their scholarship application.
