Sergio Vieira de Mello devoted his life to the United Nations and its ideals. Working in some of the world’s most volatile regions, he recognized that the choice between good and evil is often not a simple one, and that peacekeeping demands a balance between pragmatism and idealism, principles and compromise. He was killed by a bomb in Baghdad in August 2003, while serving as United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary General to Iraq.
