Memphis Exploratory: Grade 6 Course Outline

This course outline for sixth grade students provides activities, materials, and assessments that guide students through an examination of the factors that make them who they are as individuals, as members of groups, and as part of a larger community. This inquiry, which adapts lessons from the Facing History units Identity & Community and My Part of the Story and includes materials to support R. J. Palacio’s Wonder and Jacqueline Woodson’s memoir Brown Girl Dreaming, sparks dialogue and challenges students to consider how they can work together to create the kind of community in their school that feels inclusive and inviting for all.

This unit outline is part of the Memphis Exploratory pilot.
