Having watched the events of the last week: the indignity Christian Cooper experienced, George Floyd's death at the hands of police, the sorrow and outrage of protesters in Minneapolis and around the country—all set against the backdrop of an ongoing pandemic which disproportionately impacts communities of color and reinforces long standing inequities—we are hurting and grieving. Yet when I see the United State’s policies separating immigrant families—families like mine—what seems like more incidents of race and culture-based violence daily, and the growing distrust of people from immigrant communities, it makes me wonder how some people fail to see the humanity of their neighbors."

From Iohud, With swastikas and other symbols of hate regularly showing up in local schools, teachers must talk to their students about the rise of white nationalism and the dangers of falling prey to false arguments about race. "These conversations are not comfortable — that's a fact," said Juan Castellanos, associate program director for the New York office of Facing History and Ourselves.

    This workshop will be held via Zoom.

    Teaching The Civil Rights Movement and the Fight for Equitable Education

    In this two part online series, participants will learn how to implement a Civil Rights unit using Facing History’s resources on school desegregation for in person or remote teaching. Producers of the podcast School Colors will join us to discuss contemporary connections to the legacy of the struggle for equitable education in New York City.

    Teaching Memoir Series: Identity, History, and Choices

    This three part series will draw on Facing History’s Witnesses to History Memoir Collection, to explore ways to engage youth in thinking about identity, reflecting on the impact of history on individuals and groups, and analyzing adolescent choices. The third session will feature Nicole Chung, author of All You Can Ever Know.

    This workshop is intended for middle and high school teachers in the New York/New Jersey area. NY participants will receive CTLE hours and NJ participants can get PD hours upon completion.

Facing History New York's Speakers Bureau is a unique resource for educators. Bringing a speaker into your classroom illuminates the history you teach and helps students connect this history to the moral choices they make in their own lives. Our regional speakers bureau includes veterans of the U.S. Civil Rights Movement and survivors of the Holocaust.
