LA Upstander: Abraham F.

Throughout distance learning, Abraham has sought to make learning more accessible to his peers. He has taken it upon himself to organize study groups, focusing on students who he knows are struggling and looking for additional support.

Throughout distance learning, Abraham has sought to make learning more accessible to his peers. He has taken it upon himself to organize study groups, focusing on students who he knows are struggling and looking for additional support. In this context, he's standing up for selflessness and altruism, using his time to make sure that others are getting access to education when obstacles at home can make things difficult.

The impact has been stronger, more supportive classroom culture all around in all classes, as well as stronger teacher morale.

Our school serves the communities hardest hit by distance learning. Our student community is overwhelmingly low-income students of color. Multi-generational homes, parents that work out of the house as essential workers, limited access to reliable internet, and other factors serve as major obstacles to learning. Abraham is a rare student who, in addition to our staff, is trying hard to make a difficult situation brighter by showing his concern for his peers.
