"To Give My Voice to Those Who Don’t Yet Have One": Aung Khine M. Aung Khine M. recounts the harrowing tale of his family's experiences in Burma and their journey as refugees. He learned English in refugee camps, but it was when he became a Facing History and Ourselves student at Lowell (MA) High School that he was able to express the truth about genocide and horror, and what it is to be a victim simply because of who a person is. His teacher Ms. Morgenstern, and other upstanders and survivors, have inspired him. Facing History gave him the language to express things that seem beyond language. |

New Immigrants Share Their Stories The students of Newcomers High School in Long Island City, New York, which specializes in teaching recent immigrants, and those of St. Luke's, a private middle school in Manhattan, come together to dialogue about difference and combat bias. One of her great-grandfathers was an African American soldier in World War II who came home to the segregated South, but no one discussed how much it hurt to live under Jim Crow laws. |
