India Meissel is one of the 2004 Esther Goldman Teacher Award winners for Excellence in Holocaust Education. As part of her award, the Holocaust Commission of the United Jewish Federation of Tidewater, Virginia sponsored her attendance at the Facing History and Ourselves Summer Institute in Brookline, Massachusetts.

Abercrombie & Fitch Faces Lawsuit Over Muslim Headscarf

Abercrombie & Fitch refused to hire Samantha Elauf because she wears a headscarf. Nineteen-year-old Elauf is a community college student from Tulsa, Oklahoma. She is Muslim, and covers her head for religious reasons. When Elauf applied for a position at a Tulsa Abercrombie Kids store in June of 2008, she was turned down, and later found out from a friend who works at the store that “the headscarf cost her the job.” The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) has filed suit against Abercrombie on Elauf’s behalf.

Arizona Teacher Awarded Outstanding Educator
Tuscon, Arizona - Jessica Issaharov, a Facing History teacher since 2001, was recently recognized as the Outstanding Judaic Educator of the Year from the Jewish Federation of Tucson, Arizona. The Federation honored Issaharov for her work in teaching Holocaust studies and motivating students to make a difference within their own communities.

Civil Rights Protesters Offered Pardon for 1963 Birmingham Arrests

On May 2nd, 1963, over a thousand black children in Birmingham, Alabama took part in a nonviolent protest against racial segregation now known as the “Children’s Crusade.”  The children skipped school that day and marched together, two-by-two, singing songs of freedom.  The police confronted the children wielding clubs and fire houses, and set dogs on them.  Hundreds of children were arrested, many taken to jail in school buses.  Frank James recounts this story in his Facing Today
