In this first person narrative, Friedrich is the friend and neighbor of the narrator (whose character is based on the experiences of the author). The two boys are born in the same year, 1925, and the difference in their religions matters little in the early years of their friendship. In 1933, things began to change for the Jews, and for this friendship. The story follows the relationship of the boys through 1942; a chronology is included in the back of the book. This book is suitable for younger readers, but has also been used at the high school level.
